Sunday Stacks: Easter Edition

Really, if you think about it, Easter is a batshit crazy holiday and I kinda love it for that. A bunny who hides eggs filled with candy? Uh, okay, America. Good work on that one. But screw it. Bunnies, eggs, pastels, baskets, bonnets -- all of these are what Martha Stewart would call a good thing. Of course there is a larger religious narrative behind the holiday, but that doesn't really have anything to do with us. It's all about celebrating the new season: Spring! I am excited indeed for all the trees to bloom and the weather to move from the low 70s to the high 70s.

Pretty much every brand in children's books, including well-known authors not known for being particularly commercial, have an Easter book. Dora, Spot, Blue's Clues, Littlest Pet Shop, Corduroy... and so on. It's like the ubiquitous Christmas album among recording artists: not necessarily an artistic highpoint, but can be good fun nonetheless.

If you're in the mood for a good cry, please read The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes. Kinda feministy, beautiful vintage illustrations, totally great.
