One

This morning when Bea was napping, I went to town with my sewing machine and busted out this:

Advent Calendar

Okay, that's a bit of a lie. I love taking credit for Alden's work. He cut out and glued down the tree and -- painstakingly -- all the numbers. I sewed everything else. It's kind of wonderful, isn't it? I know I should be more modest, but I gotta say, I'm pretty proud of the things that Alden and I make together (Exhibit A: Bea, or should she be Exhibit B? *yuck yuck*). It was pretty simple. Because it's felt and I'm lazy (or rather it's felt because I'm lazy), none of the edges are finished. I just busted out my machine and sewed down the strips horizontally, folded up the bottom edge to make the lowest pocket, sewed down the trim and then sewed the vertical divisions between pockets. The ornament hooks are just brads stuffed through pre-cut holes. Easy, but it's all part of my guns-blazing assault on holiday humbuggery. This child will feel Christmas spirit if I have to shove it down her throat with a splintery tongue depressor. Happy holidays!

I'll post more photos as the month goes on and the big day gets closer. Our goal is ultimately to have 25 hand sculpted ornaments, but right now just four of them are made so the other pockets are stuffed with cheap Hello Kitty and Star Wars ornaments from years past. To celebrate the new month and our pretty little calendar, we put the coolest ornament up first. Alden made it a few nights ago. Here's a close up on a white background:

Ornament '09

I shit on Alden a lot. I mean, I obviously adore him and he's wonderful to me, but I give him a lot of grief for the little stuff. But HOLY FUCK, that man is a genius with felt and Sculpty and there is no surer jetway to the gooey center of my heart than a handcrafted Sculpty ornament. I love that man.

You guys are awesome! I love that not only are you rocking a new family tradition, but you are MAKING it yourselves. That is so surreal, you guys are awesome! :)

You guys are totally an unstoppable creative team! I'm kinda jealous. Seth rarely joins me in creative endeavors, but I think it may be because I don't let him! I work best alone and tend to alienate people with that and shove them OUT OUT OUT of my creative space. I need to work on that.

That ornament is all kinds of cool! Kudos to Alden. ...and kudos to you for your sewing machine skills! I never even mastered the art of threading a machine. It's all so complicated!
